Getting Approved for 2 Delta Amex Cards – 100k Miles in Total

Last week I decided to apply for several new credit cards in a mini ‘app-o-rama’—in total I submitted five applications and was approved for four cards.

Included in the mix of cards I was approved for were both the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express and the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express.

Depending on the redemption rate the 50,000 SkyMiles miles from the sign-up bonus can easily be worth ~$600+ in free flights. This means getting both cards will net 100,000 miles (~$1,200 in value).

I’ve never had either of the cards before so I decide to apply with hopes that I get approved and earn a total of 100,000 Delta miles and $100 in statement credits.

Increased Delta Amex Offers

All of the Delta American Express credit cards are offering a limited time increased sign-up bonus until July6, 2016.

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex cards (personal and business) have an increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles after spending $2,000 within the first 3 months. Additionally, each card is offering a $50 statement credit when you make Delta purchase within the first 3 months.

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Amex cards (personal and business) are offering 60,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after you make $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months. Additionally, you’ll earn a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase within the first 3 months.

What Is an ‘App-o-Rama’?

In short an ‘app-o-rama’ is when you submit multiple credit card applications all on the same day to try to minimize the total number of hard credit inquiries.

Although opinions have evolved over the last few years regarding ‘app-o-ramas’ and if they are still advantageous (check out Travel Codex’s post on the modified ‘app-o-rama’), for simplicity I still decided to apply for for all cards on the same day.

The strategy behind applying for multiple cards from a specific bank on the same day is that most of the time the multiple hard credit pulls get combined into one inquiry.

However, this does not happen 100% of the time and there are some limitations—one being applying for two American Express cards on the same day (at least from my experience).

Approved for 2 Amex Delta Cards

In my last round of credit card applications I decided to apply for both the personal and business version of the Gold Delta Amex Credit Card:

I decided to submit both applications at the same time in different browsers, mostly just to see how things would unfold. I wasn’t expecting that I would get approved for both cards at the same time, even though I recently read a comment on /r/churning of a reader being approved for two Amex cards on the same day.

The Results

I was instantly approved for the personal card, but the business card application went pending.

I immediately decided to call Amex’s reconsideration line to see if I can push the application through. Sometimes all it takes is identification verification or providing  additional information regarding your business.

On the call I was told that my application was on hold and will be processed in 5 days. The representative informed me that this was due to Amex’s rule that they can only pull a credit report one time every five days. It appears that Amex will not use the same credit pull to process two applications.

This was bad news and it meant that when the business card is processed after the hold it would result in an additional hard credit pull.

There was no way around this and I contemplated cancel the application all together to apply at a later date, but then again the 50,000 offer is limited time and slated to end July 6, 2016.

I decided to let the application go through.

After a couple days I decided to call back into the reconsider line and requested for my second application to be processed.

After a minute on hold I was approved for the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, which means in the end I was approved for both Amex Delta cards and I’ll be earning a total of 100,000 Delta miles.

Takeaway

The major takeaway from this is that yes, it is possible to get approved for two Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards when you apply on the same day. I’d assume this is likely also the case with the Platinum SkyMiles Credit Cards.

However, if you’re applying for both cards on the same day to try to avoid an extra hard credit inquiry your plan may not work. From my experience the first card was processed and approved, but the second card was held and processed several days later.

If you end up applying for both cards (or any two Amex credit cards) you’ll have to decide if you want to try on the same day.

From several data points on the web it seems possible to be approved for two Amex credit cards on the same day, but your mileage may vary. If you are not approved for both cards you always have the option to call in and cancel the second application with no drawback that I can foresee.
