The last time that Barclays had a bonus offer around 50k was 2 years ago, so if you’ve been thinking about getting this card Lufthansa miles then now is a good time.

Since Lufthansa isa member of Star Alliance you can redeem Lufthansa miles for flights on other Star Alliance airlines, including United and US Air. The benefit of using these miles on any Star Alliance airline makes this deal worth the $79 annual fee in my opinion. You can use 50,000 bonus miles for 2 domestic coach tickets or 1.5 domestic first class tickets within the continental US.

The $5,000 spend requirement is high, but the payout in points is extremely attractive considering the normal bonus is 20,000 miles. Normally Barclays cards have much lower minimum spends, such as the 40,000 mile offer on the The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® after the first purchase, and $1,000 (updated: now $3,000) on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® to get the 40,000 miles sign-up bonus (worth ~$440 in travel).

The companion ticket that is part of the sign-up bonus is basically worthless to big mile and point earners. It is only valid on domestic coach tickets and you have to purchase the first ticket at a higher price than a regular ticket. Plus you have to pay the fees on the companion ticket–which completely breaks this deal.

Although the 50,000 mile bonus is not jaw-dropping and there are better cards — Chase Ink Bold, Chase Ink Plus, or the American Express Business Gold Rewards card for 50,000 points — I can think of spending $5,000 on to meet a min spend. This card can still be a good option for someone needing another card that earns points that can be used with Star Alliance and who doesn’t mind the larger minimum spend. Barclays usually pulls your credit with TransUnion which tends to be used less by other large banks.

Note: There is a link on Flyertalk that offers 50,000 miles, but with only a $2,500 minimum spending requirement within 3 months. The potential drawback of going this route is that if you are approved for the lower Platinum card you will only earn 5,000 miles. So if you want the guaranteed 50,000 miles and can meet the minimum spend of $5,000 it would be worth using being certain.

How much are 50,000 Lufthansa Miles Worth?

Basically this card offer is worth 2 coach tickets within the continental US, 1.5 first class tickets on United within the continental US, a one way ticket to Europe from Dallas for 55,000 miles in business class, a ticket to Europe from the US for 50,000 miles in coach. The options of first class on Lufthansa and Swiss are ridiculously priced and have high fuel surcharges so I won’t even mention them here.

The major drawback of this offer is that you can expect to pay fuel surcharges for any award redemption unless they are with United, US Airways and LOT.

Booking one-way award flights are possible for half the price of the round-trip amount with Lufthansa miles. If you are booking award tickets online on a Lufthansa, Austrian Air, Swiss Air flight you can book on the Lufthansa website. For booking awards on other Star Alliance partners–United and US Airways–you will have to call Lufthansa to book.

The best purpose for using 50,000 Lufthansa miles is likely for booking awards within one country for 25,000 miles round-trip or 35,000 miles (17,500 miles for a 1-way). By booking travel within the US on a United First Class ticket you will also avoid the high fuel surcharges. Take a look at the Lufthansa award chart.

If need to round out your Lufthansa miles account for an award flight you can transfer Starwood hotel points. When you transfer in increments of 20,000 points, you get a 5,000-mile bonus – 25% more miles.

The Bottom Line

If you plan on using domestic award flights Lufthansa Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® 50k mile offer could be a good deal for you. Personally I think the best use of 50,000 Lufthansa miles is for 2 coach award flights or 1.5 first class award flights within the continental US. Not bad for just one card bonus.

If you are looking for a bonus that will get you points to use on an award international business or first class flights, expect to pay fuel surcharges unless you fly on United, US Airways, or LOT.

    • @ vijay – You can apply for more than one Barclays card on the same day. If you are not approved for the first card I would not apply for second one before calling into the reconsideration line.
