The 100,000 Avios welcome bonus offer for the British Airways Visa is back (OFFER EXPIRED)! The offer was available pulled about a month ago, but now the it’s back. However the annual fee is no longer waived on this current offer.

British Airways Visa Signature® Card (OFFER EXPIRED)

  • Earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 in 3 months
  • Earn an additional 25,000 more points after spending $10,000 in 1 year
  • Earn an additional 25,000 more points after spending $20,000 in 1 year (100,000 points for $20,000 total spending)

Similar to the past offer, you’ll get 50,000 Avios after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months. To earn an additional 25,000 Avios you need to spend a total of $10,000 in the first year, and to earn the last 25,000 Avios you need to spend $20,000 miles within the year. Essentially the bonus amount is tiered depending on how much spending you put on the card within the first year.

Additionally, the card earns 2.5 Avios per dollar spent on British Airways purchases and 1.25 Avios on all other purchases.

After reaching the $20,000 spending requirement in the first year you will earn a total of 125,000 Avios including the Avios earned from spending.

Avios offer an amazing value for short flights and domestic trips can be as lot at 9,000 Avios round trip. They also offer great value for flights to Hawaii and Mexico from the West Coast. You can fly round trip to Hawaii from Los Angeles for 25,000 miles!

Another perk of this card is that after you spend $30,000 in one calendar year you earn a companion certificate that allows a second person to travel completely free (you still have to pay taxes, fees, and fuel surcharge) on an award or purchased ticket British Airways.

Say you book a business class ticket from the US to London using the companion pass, you can get two roundtrip business class tickets for 100k Avios.

You Can Avoid Fuel Surcharges when Using Avios

When redeeming Avios on BA or some partner airlines fuel surcharges can really kill the deal. When redeeming an international flight on British Airways the fuel surcharges can cost over $1,000! There are some ways to avoid or at least minimize them by using partner airlines that do not charge high fuel surcharges.

No Fuel Surcharges:

Air Berlin – to/from Europe and some Middle East

LAN – to/from most of South America

American Airlines – domestic US and North American flights

Low Fuel Surcharges:

Aer Lingus – to/from Europe

Iberia – to/from Europe

American Airlines – to/from Asia

Based on these partner airlines that do not charge high fuel surcharges you can get to most destinations paying very low fees. For example, using Aer Lingus for a roundtrip flight from the US to Dublin will only run you $25 in fees.

To get down to South America, both LAN and American Airlines will be a good option and fees will be low enough. American Airlines is also the best option for domestic flights and to get to/from Central America/Caribbean.

Getting to Asia or Australia is another problem, and you will run into very high fuel surcharges on Qantas. I would not recommend using Avios for travel to get across the Pacific and would look at using other miles.
