Here is why two Southwest Visa 50,000 Rapid Reward sign up bonuses could potentially be a huge deal to you if you fly domestically.

Southwest Airline’s Companion Pass is possibly the most lucrative benefit any airline loyalty program offers. The Companion Pass allows you to assign a companion that will be able to fly for free on any flight you book–including flights booked with points. The only thing you and your designated companion will have to do is part with the 9/11 taxes.

I recently got my second go around at this offer and have my two new cards in hand, one personal and one business. I was curious to see just how easy it is to book a ticket with Rapid Rewards points since there are no award “availability” on Southwest–if there’s a ticket for sale in the same ticket fare that you purchase (even with points), then your companion can fly as well for free. After qualifying for the Companion Pass you and your companion get to enjoy it for the rest of the current year plus the entire next calendar year. So if you were to qualify for the pass in January 2013, you’d enjoy the benefits until December 31, 2014!

There are two ways to qualify:
1) Fly 100 one-way flights within a calendar year
2) Accrue 110,000 points in a calendar year — this includes flights, credit card purchases – including credit card sign-up bonuses like the current offers below as well as partner activity like hotel stays/transfers and rental cars.

I wanted to look into some flights from PDX to SFO so see how easy it was and true value of 110,000 points.

What I found was that I could potentially get a round trip flight for as little as 9,479 (plus $10.00 in taxes) Rapid Rewards points. Granted this is a fairly short flight and I was booking about a month out in advance–that is still cheap for a round trip flight booked with points.

So how does this mean you could get 22 round trip flights?

Well, if you were able to get 100,000 Rapid Rewards points from the two cards and qualify for companion status–putting your total miles at 110,000. This would equate to potentially redeeming 11 round trip flights at this point value, as well as a free ticket for your companion–making this deal worth up to a total of 22 round trip domestic flights.
