There are Marriott Bonvoy credit cards issued by Chase and American Express:
All Marriott Bonvoy credit cards earn Marriott points on Marriott stays and everyday spending. Here's what you can earn with each card:
When you sign up for a Marriott Bonvoy credit card, it's linked to your Marriott account and allows you to earn Marriott bonus points on Marriott stays and all other purchases. Marriott cards also come with other perks like complimentary elite status (up to Gold status with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees) and Free Night Awards on your account anniversary good for a free stay at any Marriott hotel with a redemption level up to 35,000 points.
The credit score you need for a Marriott Bonvoy credit card depends on which card you want. As a general rule, you will usually need a credit score of 640 or higher to get approved, although some cards may require a score of at least 670.
Remember your credit score isn't the only factor that's considered: you should also have sufficient income to pay your debt obligations, a fairly low debt-to-income ratio, and no recent derogatory marks on your credit. Chase also has a 24/5 rule to consider if you want a Chase Marriott Bonvoy credit card: if you have opened 5+ credit cards from any issuing bank in the last 24 months, you can't get approved for a new Chase card.
The Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card from Chase has $0 annual fee and earns 3x Marriott Bonvoy points at Marriott hotels (half the rate of other Marriott credit cards) plus 2x Marriott points on travel expenses and 1x points on everything else.
Yes. Marriott Bonvoy credit cards often come with automatic elite status and you can reach a higher elite status tier with spending on your Marriott card. With the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card or Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees, you can spend $35,000 in a year to reach Gold status. With the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees, you can hit Platinum status with $75,000 in card spendings in a year.
Yes, you can have several Marriott Bonvoy credit cards if you want. This may make sense to get the free night certificates each year which can more than make up for the annual fees.
This depends on your spending habits and how frequently you stay with Marriott. For many people, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card from Chase is the best choice because it comes with an annual free night certificate that can more than make up for the annual fee. If you stay with Marriott frequently, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees can be worth it.
A Marriott Bonvoy credit card is definitely worth having if you stay with Marriott fairly often and want to earn free stays more frequently. Even the $450 annual fee with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees is worth it for frequent Marriott guests thanks to the $300 annual Marriott credit and free night certificate which already more than make up for the annual fee.
There are many ways to earn Marriott points in the program:

How many points you earn per stay depends on whether you use a Marriott credit card, your elite status, how much the stay costs, and whether you qualify for a promotion that offers bonus points. On a $200 night stay, you will earn 2,000 base points plus 200 to 1,500 elite status bonus points and 1,200 bonus points for using a Marriott Bonvoy credit card.
You can buy Marriott points here at $12.50 per 1,000 points in 1,000-point increments. You can buy up to 50,000 points per year.
Marriott points usually post to your account within 3-5 business days.
Want to earn more Marriott points on your next stay? Check for promotions at the Marriott Promotion Center.
You can earn Marriott points on up to 3 rooms as long as you are staying in at least one of the rooms and your membership number is attached to each room and you are paying for all of the rooms.
Yes, you can earn airline miles instead of Marriott Bonvoy points with more than 40 participating loyalty programs. You will earn 2x miles on qualifying charges at many Marriott brands, but some brands like Courtyard by Marriott and TownePlace Suites only earn 1x miles. To earn miles, you need to update your profile to choose miles instead of points and select a loyalty program.
There are plenty of ways to earn Marriott points outside of hotel stays including regular spending with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card, transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards points into the program, booking travel with partners, booking destination activities, signing up for offers, and transferring miles or points from other loyalty programs.
Marriott points typically post to your account within a few days. Points earned with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card usually post within a few days of your billing cycle ending.
As a Marriott Bonvoy cardholder, you earn free night certificates on your account anniversary. Of the 4 Marriott credit cards, only the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card does not offer a free night certificate, but therefor has $0 annual fee. You can earn suite night awards by staying 50 nights in a year to qualify for Platinum status or 75 nights in a year to qualify for Titanium status.
Marriott Bonvoy points are worth about 0.8 cents each, although you can get a higher value with strategic redemption.
You can redeem Marriott points for:
Learn more about ways to use Marriott Bonvoy points here.
For a standard award stay, you need between 7,500 and 85,000 points based on the hotel category. Free nights can cost as low as 4,000 to 5,000 once Marriott Bonvoy rolls out its peak and off-peak pricing. You can also snag standard award stays starting at just 6,000 points per night with a PointSavers award.
To redeem Marriott points, log into your Marriott Bonvoy account and search for a hotel with the "Use Points" option selected. Points will be deducted from your account automatically. You can use all points to book a free night, a combination of points and cash, or you can book an award stay with Points Advance if you don't have enough points yet.
With a co-branded Marriott Bonvoy credit card, you can earn Marriott e-certificates on your account anniversary that can be used for a free night stay at most Marriott properties. Here's how to earn a Marrriott free night certificate with each credit card:
Certificates are automatically deposited in your Marriott Bonvoy account several weeks after your account anniversary.
You can also earn a free night certificate by staying at Marriott properties 75 nights in a year for an Annual Choice Benefit.
Free night certificates are automatically added to your account. To redeem a certificate, search for a hotel using points as you would normally and choose one for 35,000 points or less (or 50,000 points with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card Terms Apply; Rates and Fees). At checkout, you will have the option to pay using the certificate.
With Marriott Bonvoy points valued at 0.8 cents each, 100,000 Marriott points will be worth around $800. You can get a better value for your points if you're strategic, however. It's possible to get well over $1,000 in value for the points by staying at hotels that offer a great value and using the 5th night free benefit for a longer stay.
You can transfer your Marriott points to more than 40 airline loyalty programs. In most cases, the transfer ratio is 3 Marriott points to 1 mile. For every 60,000 points, you get 15,000 bonus points. That equals 25,000 miles with most partners.
Very few frequent flyer programs allow you to transfer miles to Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott and United have a partnership that allows elite members to transfer points/miles between programs once the accounts are linked. You need to have Premier Silver status or higher with United to transfer miles to Marriott points at a 1:1 ratio.
Points Advance is a feature that allows you to book a free award stay before you have the necessary number of points.
With Travel Packages, you can use Marriott points for hotel and airfare packages.
With Cash + Points, you can combine cash and points to book award stays. Cash + Points redemptions start at $55 + 3,500 points.
PointSavers are promotions on select Marriott properties that give you a discount on award stays. For example, you can book a category 1 hotel for 6,000 with the PointSavers rate instead of 7,500 points.
You can upgrade paid Marriott stays with points in 5,000-point increments. Points can also be used to book upgraded award stays in suites.
You can use Marriott points to book stays at all-inclusive resorts like The Westin Golf Resort & Spa in Costa Rica. This includes the new all-inclusive resorts Marriott has announced within the Elegant Hotels Group.
While you can technically sell Marriott points at a very low rate to third-party brokers, as a general rule, you cannot sell Marriott points.
You can book a cruise with Marriott Cruise with Points using your Marriott Bonvoy points.
No, Marriott points can be redeemed for cash.
You can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to another Marriott account, but it must be done over the phone by calling Marriott Rewards Guest Services at (801) 468-4000. You can transfer up to 100,000 points per year. Any account can receive up to 500,000 transferred points per year.
When transferring Marriott points to partner airlines, the transfer time ranges from less than one day to one week or longer, depending on the partner. Transfers between Marriott accounts typically take a few minutes to a few hours.
You can cancel an award stay and receive a refund of your points if you cancel 48 hours or more before your arrival.
Yes, but you will need to either call Marriott Bonvoy customer service at 800-627-7468 to make the reservation or book the award stay online and add your friend or family member to the reservation as a guest.
You can't transfer a free night certificate to another account, but you can use it for someone else if you add them to the hotel reservation as a guest.
Marriott hotels range from category 1 (7,500 points per night for a standard redemption) to category 8 (85,000 points per night for a standard redemption).
The Marriott Bonvoy 5th night free benefit is only available when you book an award stay. This benefit applies to all standard award rates plus PointSavers rates, but only for standard rooms.
Anniversary free night e-certificates always expire after 12 months. You need to book and complete your award stay before the certificate expires.
While a Marriott free night certificate can be used with points to book a multi-night award stay, you can't combine a certificate and points for a single redemption night. For example, if your certificate is good for a property up to 35,000 points and you want to book an award stay at a hotel that costs 50,000 points, you can't use 15,000 points along with the certificate.
With a Suite Night Award, you can confirm a Marriott room upgrade before check-in. They can be used on Points + Cash stays, award stays, and paid stays, but not Advance Purchase rates.
