There's nothing worse than saving up your Hyatt points for months or years, only to discover they've expired before you have a chance to use them for something special.
Like most hotel loyalty programs, you'll need to keep your account active or your Hyatt points will expire.
Here's everything you need to know about the Hyatt point expiration policy and what you need to do to keep your points active.
When Do Hyatt Points Expire?
World of Hyatt points expire after 24 months of inactivity. This is a fairly standard expiration policy across most hotel loyalty programs.
If you do not perform certain qualifying activities for 24 months to keep your account active, your World of Hyatt points will be forfeit.
Hyatt used to close loyalty accounts when members' accounts were inactive for 24 months. This changed in 2017. Although your points are forfeited, your account will remain open and you can continue earning new points.
While some loyalty programs waive points expiration for members with a certain elite status or lifetime elite membership, World of Hyatt does not.
The good news is keeping your Hyatt account active is easy. You just need earn or redeem points at least once within a 24-month period to keep your points from expiring.
Most earning or redemption activities count as a qualifying activity with few exceptions.
How to Keep Hyatt Points From Expiring
Your World of Hyatt account will remain active as long as you post some type of qualifying activity. Almost any way you earn or redeem Hyatt points counts toward keeping your account active so your points don't expire.
As you can see, you don't even need to stay at a Hyatt property to keep Hyatt points from expiring.
Here's a look at all the ways to keep your World of Hyatt account active and prevent your Hyatt points from being forfeited.
Stay at Hyatt
Award and paid stays at World of Hyatt hotels count as qualifying activities to keep your account active. You must book directly with Hyatt, however, to earn points and keep your points from expiring.
You can stay at any participating Hyatt hotel. You can read our in-depth Guide to World of Hyatt to learn about participating Hyatt brands.
If you redeem points for an award stay, note that canceling your reservation or failing to check-in (a no-show) will not count as redeeming Hyatt points and won't keep your account active.
Stay with Hyatt Partners
Hyatt has an admittedly small portfolio, but they are partnered with M life Rewards, the MGM Resorts program, and Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). Staying at a participating partner hotel also counts as a qualifying activity to keep your Hyatt points active by earning Hyatt points.
M life Rewards participating hotels are located in Las Vegas and include MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, New York New York Hotel and Casino, Bellagio Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay, and others.
Before staying at an M life Rewards property, make sure you are a member of both programs. At check-in, let the front desk agent know you want to earn Hyatt points for your stay.
SLH hotels that participate in the World of Hyatt program can be booked directly through Hyatt to earn Hyatt points and keep your account active.
Use a World of Hyatt Credit Card
The The World of Hyatt Credit Card from Chase offers automatic elite status and an easy way to earn Hyatt points for regular spending.

According to Hyatt's terms and conditions, simply having an active World of Hyatt credit card associated with your loyalty account is enough to keep your account active and prevent your points from expiring.
If you want to be on the safe side, though, you can use your card at least occasionally to earn Hyatt points. You don't need to use your The World of Hyatt Credit Card to book Hyatt stays; you can use it to earn Hyatt points by paying bills or for everyday spending.
Fly with American Airlines
American Airlines and Hyatt partnered in 2019. On flights and hotel stays, you can now earn both Hyatt points and American Airlines AAdvantage miles. If you fly with American, you can keep your World of Hyatt account active by earning hotel rewards points — but you'll need to make sure your accounts are linked.
You'll need to be Discoverist elite status or higher to earn 1 Hyatt point per $1 spent on American Airlines flights.
Rent a Car with Avis
Do you have a trip coming up? If you rent a car with Avis, you can earn bonus Hyatt points to keep your account active. To earn Hyatt points, you must add your World of Hyatt member number to your reservation when you book a car. You also need to book with the discount code K817700.
Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt
With Hyatt's generous award chart and redemptions that begin at 5,000 points per night, plus the solid transfer ratio and comparative value of Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Hyatt points, transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your Hyatt account can be a smart way to keep your account active.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio in increments of 1,000 points. To transfer Ultimate Rewards points, you need to have a qualifying Chase card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred Credit Card.
Transfer Points to Another Hyatt Member
Hyatt allows you to share Hyatt points with other members. You can combine points with someone else every 30 days, although the fine print does state this should only be done when you have a clear redemption in mind.
To transfer points to someone else, you also need to submit a completed paper form that's mailed or emailed to Hyatt. It can take up to several weeks for the request and transfer to be finalized.

Convert Hyatt Points to Miles
Converting points to miles usually is a poor value, but it is an option that keeps your points active. World of Hyatt has 24 airline partners that include United, Southwest, American Airlines, Emirates, and Delta.
In most cases, you'll get just 1 mile for every 2.5 Hyatt points you transfer.
Buy Hyatt Points
As a general rule, it's not a good deal to buy Hyatt points as you need to buy them in 1,000 point increments at 2.4 cents each. Buying Hyatt points does reset the clock on your points expiring, but it should only be reserved for times when you have a redemption option you want to use.
How to Reinstate Hyatt Points
Unfortunately, World of Hyatt has a strict policy against reinstating expired points. The terms and conditions go so far as to state, "Under no circumstances will forfeited points be reinstated." If your points expire due to inactivity, you won't have any luck getting them reinstated, even with a fee.
